enableAjaxValidator is it ONLY or ALSO

The documentation for enableAjaxValidator doesn't explain whether this property means that the validation is ONLY done by ajax, or is ALSO done by ajax - as well as in the php handling of the submission.
Can you please clarify for me?

The validation is ALSO done by AJAX.
